Our Story
Custom Canines was founded by two women who know what dogs give to a life — and who know exactly what bad breeding takes away. This isn't a business built on opportunity. It's built on experience, loss, and a genuine belief that things here need to be done differently.
Why We Exist
We believe that good breeding isn't just about producing beautiful dogs. It's the foundation of a long, healthy life — and the single most important factor in whether a dog ends up thriving in a loving home, or struggling through years of preventable health problems.
We also believe that fewer dogs end up abandoned and in shelters when people are properly matched with the right dog from the start. A family that gets the right breed, from the right breeder, with the right preparation — that family keeps their dog for life.
Custom Canines exists to bridge the gap between what the UAE market offers and what families here actually deserve.
The Team
Alissa
Founder & Dog Concierge
Alissa got her first dog the way most people do — with enthusiasm, trust, and not enough information. The breeder wasn't running a mill; the parents were cared for. But no health testing had been done. At the time, she didn't know to ask.
That dog became her soul dog. A Rottweiler who was by her side for almost twelve years. But from a relatively young age, the signs appeared — arthritis in her elbows and paws, then spondylosis. An active, vital dog slowed down far too early by conditions that proper breeding could have prevented. Watching that happen shaped everything that followed.
When Alissa moved to the UAE, she was struck by the contrast with Switzerland — the standards she had grown up around versus what she found here. Pet stores with puppies in cages. Breeders with no health testing. A market that left families with no honest choice between a puppy mill and a rescue.
She became deeply involved in rescue — and still is. But she also recognised that rescue isn't the right path for every family, and that without a trustworthy alternative, people were simply going to keep ending up with poorly bred dogs from mills. She believes that good breeding is part of the solution to the very problem that fills shelters.
Liza
Dog Behaviourist & Breeding Specialist
Liza grew up in one of the more dangerous parts of South Africa, where protection dogs weren't a lifestyle choice — they were a necessity. From childhood, dogs were a constant presence, and from early adulthood, she was breeding and raising them herself for exactly the kind of high-stakes circumstances where health and temperament aren't preferences — they're everything.
When a dog's job is to protect a family in genuinely threatening situations, you cannot cut corners on genetics, health testing or early development. Liza learned this not from books but from direct experience. A dog with compromised hips, poor nerve strength or an unstable temperament isn't just a disappointment — it's a liability. That standard never left her.
As a qualified dog behaviourist, Liza has worked across the full spectrum — from puppy foundations to complex behavioural rehabilitation, from confident family companions to reactive dogs that other trainers had given up on. That breadth of experience gives her something rare: the ability to look at a family and a dog and understand, with genuine depth, whether they belong together.
